Pitcher Sage Essential Oil
Lepechinia calycina — “Woodbalm”
Experience the Crisp Spirit of California
Pitcher Sage Essential Oil (Lepechinia calycina), also called Woodbalm, is a rare California native mint with a refreshing, sweet-green aroma. Traditionally valued by Native Californians for relieving headache, fever, pelvic discomfort, and seasonal colds, it is also noted for easing uterine irritability and occasional benign prostate inflammation.
Sustainably wild grown and artisan-distilled in small batches at Refugio Gardens, its lemony–terpenic top notes and subtle woody-fir undertones reflect a natural profile rich in Δ³-carene, 1,8-cineole, and camphor. These active constituents make it antioxidant-rich, refreshing, and clarifying for both body and spirit.
Aroma & Character
- Top notes (0–15 min): bright pine–citrus “snap” with cooling eucalyptus clarity — Δ³-carene, 1,8-cineole, camphene, α/β-pinene, limonene.
- Heart notes (15 min–2 hrs): resinous green-floral with a clean camphor lift — camphor, (Z)-β-ocimene, myrcene, linalool, terpinen-4-ol, α-terpineol.
- Base notes (2–6 hrs): warm woody-balsamic drydown — β-caryophyllene, farnesenes, curcumenes, δ-cadinene, nerolidol, α-bisabolol.
This makes Pitcher Sage oil unusual:
- A bright pine–eucalyptus opening (cineole, carene, camphene, pinenes) that feels instantly clarifying.
- A sweet green-floral middle (ocimene, myrcene, traces of linalool) that softens the camphor edge.
- A gentle woody-balsamic base (caryophyllene, nerolidol, bisabolol) that lingers warmly on skin.
Discovery & Innovation
In 1997, Dr. Amy Inez Hazard performed the first known artisan steam-distillation of Lepechinia calycina, revealing its crisp, lemony–resinous aroma for the first time as a pure essential oil. Refugio Gardens remains the only known producer of authentic Pitcher Sage Essential Oil, verified through GC–MS analysis and crafted in small-batch runs.
Uses & Benefits
- Traditional support: headache, fever, and digestive irritation
- Cooling relief: noted for pelvic and uterine discomfort
- Antioxidant-rich: clarifying and restorative, historically paired with chaparral as a natural sunscreen
- Mental clarity: inspires uplift, focus, and grounded awareness
- Relaxation: supports calm energy and relieves tiredness
Chemistry & Research
Our GC–MS shows a cineole–camphor–Δ³-carene–forward chemotype consistent with the oil’s clarifying, mood-lifting profile:
- Δ³-Carene (~16.98%) – sweet pine, bright lift.
- 1,8-Cineole (~15.86%) – cool eucalyptus clarity; supports easy breathing.
- Camphor (~11.87%) – penetrating, clean, invigorating heart.
- Camphene (~10.84%), α-/β-Pinene (~13.7% total), Limonene (~6.37%) – sparkling conifer–citrus top.
- (Z)-β-Ocimene (~4.31%), Myrcene (~1.84%) – green-floral sweetness and herbal depth.
- β-Caryophyllene (~1.88%), nerolidol, α-bisabolol (tr.) – warm woody-balsamic base.
Together these constituents explain the oil’s sensory arc: an uplifting, clear opening that transitions to a green-floral heart and settles into a comforting woody drydown — a profile that performs beautifully in diffusion, anointing oils, and natural perfumery. †

Safety & Cautions
Safety & Cautions
- Please be advised to keep essential oils out of reach of pets and children.
- Please avoid using photosensitive essential oils (Lemon, Lime, Grapefruit, Orange, Bergamot, Tangerine, Calm Shen Blend and any products made with these oils such as Santa Barbara Goldenbush Lotion) prior to going out in the sun or using a tanning booth as they can react to sunlight and cause something similar to a severe sunburn.
- It is advised to void continuous long term use of the same essential oils.
- Be sure to research the powerful effects of essential oils before use.
- Use diluted essential oils on the skin (Carrier oils like Jojoba are great for this in a 10% essential oil to 90% carrier base oil ratio).
- It is advised to patch test on a small portion of sensitive skin and discontinue if there is irritation or a negative reaction.
- Please know the safety data and specific warnings on an individual oil or Blend before using.
- And please use careful caution using essential oils during pregnancy. Any use should be approved by a medical provider.
- Its important to keep essential oils away from your eyes. If oil does get in your eye, do not flush it out with water. You can dilute the area immediately with vegetable or carrier oil by placing the vegetable oil on a tissue and gently wiping the eye area.
- Also essential oils are flammable so please avoid direct contact with flames such as candles.
- Please do not use essential oils internally unless properly trained and prescribed by a physician. If accidentally swallowed, call the Poison Control Center (1-800-222-1222) immediately and do not induce vomiting.
