Sustainably wildharvested and artisan-distilled in small batches at Refugio Gardens, this cobalt-blue bottle delivers a smoke-free way to refresh skin, hair, linens, and space—honoring a plant long used in ceremony and traditional wellness.
Aroma & Character
- Fragrance: Cool, clean, camphoraceous with sweet-green herbal depth
- Note: Top to middle
- Energetics: Purifying, clarifying, gently centering
Discovery & Innovation
While the very first artisan distillation of Salvia apiana isn’t fully documented, Dr. Amy Inez Hazard began small-batch, wildcrafted distillations at Refugio Gardens in the late 1990s. Each distillation yields an essential oil and a hydrosol—the aromatic water that captures White Sage’s clarifying character in a mild format ideal for direct spray and daily care.
Uses & Benefits
- Smoke-free purification: cleanse rooms, studio, or treatment space
- Skin & body mist: post-shower toner; soothing after sun or exertion (patch test first)
- Hair & scalp refresh: light herbal spritz for freshness and clarity
- Linen & laundry: pillow/linen spray; a few pumps in the dryer
- Practice & ritual: anchor meditation, yoga, or ceremony without smoke
- Hands-on the go: quick aromatic cleanse when soap and water aren’t available
Chemistry & Research
Hydrosols naturally contain micro-droplets of essential oil plus the water-soluble plant compounds that circulated in the living plant, yielding a gentler profile than the oil alone. White Sage is known for constituents such as 1,8-cineole and camphor, studied for antimicrobial and soothing properties; in hydrosol form they’re present in delicate balance for frequent, direct spray. †
Sustainability & Harvesting
Our Salvia apiana is hand-harvested on private ranch land in the Santa Barbara foothills using plant-positive methods that protect pollinators and ensure regrowth. Steam-distilled at low temperatures in small artisan runs to preserve aromatic nuance and integrity.

What is White Sage Hydrosol?
The aromatic water co-produced during steam distillation of Salvia apiana—gentle enough for direct spray on skin, hair, linens, and space.
How is it different from the essential oil?
Hydrosol is water-based and milder. It contains tiny oil micro-droplets plus water-soluble compounds, making it ideal for frequent use and sensitive settings.
How do I use it?
As a room or linen mist, post-shower body toner, hair/scalp refresher, on the yoga mat, in the dryer, or before meditation/ceremony. Always patch test on skin.
Is it sustainably sourced?
Yes. We selectively wildharvest on private ranch land and distill in small, carefully monitored batches at Refugio Gardens.

Safety & Cautions
Safety & Cautions
- Please be advised to keep essential oils out of reach of pets and children.
- Please avoid using photosensitive essential oils (Lemon, Lime, Grapefruit, Orange, Bergamot, Tangerine, Calm Shen Blend and any products made with these oils such as Santa Barbara Goldenbush Lotion) prior to going out in the sun or using a tanning booth as they can react to sunlight and cause something similar to a severe sunburn.
- It is advised to void continuous long term use of the same essential oils.
- Be sure to research the powerful effects of essential oils before use.
- Use diluted essential oils on the skin (Carrier oils like Jojoba are great for this in a 10% essential oil to 90% carrier base oil ratio).
- It is advised to patch test on a small portion of sensitive skin and discontinue if there is irritation or a negative reaction.
- Please know the safety data and specific warnings on an individual oil or Blend before using.
- And please use careful caution using essential oils during pregnancy. Any use should be approved by a medical provider.
- Its important to keep essential oils away from your eyes. If oil does get in your eye, do not flush it out with water. You can dilute the area immediately with vegetable or carrier oil by placing the vegetable oil on a tissue and gently wiping the eye area.
- Also essential oils are flammable so please avoid direct contact with flames such as candles.
- Please do not use essential oils internally unless properly trained and prescribed by a physician. If accidentally swallowed, call the Poison Control Center (1-800-222-1222) immediately and do not induce vomiting.
