Goldenbush Hydrosol

Hazardia squarrosa — "The Late Bloomer's Reward"

Experience Goldenbush Hydrosol Firsthand

Goldenbush Hydrosol (Hazardia squarrosa) is a sweet, euphoric aromatic water distilled from the bright green-yellow flowers of wild Goldenbush on our Refugio Gardens ranch in Santa Barbara County. Presented in a cobalt-blue 4 oz glass bottle with a fine mist sprayer, this uncommon hydrosol carries an unmistakable watermelon and pear cider character — unlike any other hydrosol in the aromatic palette — perfect for mood rituals, meditation, and gentle daily care.

Aroma & Character

  • Fragrance: Sweet watermelon rind and pear cider, with green-floral brightness and a soft, grounding woody finish
  • Note: Top–middle
  • Energetics: Uplifting, gently euphoric, calming to the spirit, emotionally grounding

Uses & Benefits

  • Mood mist: an uplifting, smoke-free ritual for melancholy, fatigue, and emotional stagnation
  • Meditation anchor: settles the mind while elevating the spirit — calm but energized
  • Transitional rituals: dawn, seasonal shifts, grief work, and new beginnings
  • Everyday refresh: post-work reset, afternoon slump, pre-meditation facial mist
  • Gentle skin care: a lightly astringent, antioxidant-rich facial mist for sensitive or environmentally stressed skin

Safety Information

Internal Use: Traditional internal use of hydrosol (diluted in water) for mood support: 2 tablespoons diluted in 1 liter water throughout the day. Do not exceed 2 weeks continuous use. Not for children under 6 years. Contraindicated during pregnancy and lactation. Consult a qualified practitioner before internal use.

Topical Use: Generally safe for skin as a mist. Patch test first before broader application — the plant's resinous exudate may cause reactions in Asteraceae-sensitive individuals. Not for eyes or mucosa.

Essential Oil Note: This hydrosol is produced alongside our COA-tested essential oil (Batch #923, PhytoChemia 2023), which contains only trace thujone (0.01%) — the lowest of any oil in our collection. The hydrosol is correspondingly free of thujone concern.

Storage: Keep tightly closed in a cool, dark place. Shelf life: approximately 1–2 years with proper storage. Refrigerate after opening for extended freshness.

How to Use

  • Face & body: Mist lightly as an uplifting toner or afternoon mood lift (patch test first). Not for children under 6 years.
  • Mood & melancholy: Mist your space during low moods, gray winter days, or creative fatigue.
  • Meditation & practice: Mist your mat or practice space to invite quiet joy and emotional grounding.
  • Bath: Add 1 oz to warm bathwater for a gentle, uplifting soak for body aches and low spirits.
  • Diluted Internal Use: With practitioner guidance only. 2 tablespoons diluted in 1 liter water throughout the day for mood and mild depression support. Maximum 2 weeks continuous. Discontinue if irritation occurs.

Sustainability & Harvesting

Our Hazardia squarrosa is sustainably wild grown on private ranch land in Santa Barbara County, where it thrives in native chaparral and coastal sage scrub alongside California sagebrush, black sage, and white sage. Goldenbush is the latest bloomer of the local flora — its bright green-yellow flowers open from late summer into December, when few other California natives are flowering. This late bloom makes it a critical nectar source for native bees and butterflies, so we hand-harvest selectively from abundant stands, then steam-distill in small artisan batches at low temperatures to preserve the delicate water-soluble compounds and trace esters that give the hydrosol its distinctly fruity-floral character.

Experience Wild California

Goldenbush blooms when everyone else has given up — a brushy, spiny shrub hiding its sweetest treasure behind its prickles, rewarding only those willing to reach past the thorns. Traditionally called "the late bloomer", Goldenbush has long been a plant of late-season resilience and hidden richness. For those who feel their best days are behind them, a few mists of this hydrosol carry a different message: the brightest bloom is on its way — wild GOLDEN California in a bottle.

What is a Hydrosol?

Hydrosols are the aromatic waters co-distilled with essential oils—containing micro-droplets of the oil plus the plant's water-soluble compounds. They're gentle, versatile, and often easier for daily use than undiluted essential oils.

"Hydrosols contain all of the plant in every drop… the very fluid that was flowing through the plant cells when the plant was collected… one of the most recognized holographic substances in healing." — Suzanne Catty, Hydrosols: The Next Aromatherapy

FAQ

Can I ingest Goldenbush Hydrosol?

Traditional internal use may be used with practitioner guidance only. Dilute 2 tablespoons in 1 liter water throughout the day for mood and mild depression support. Maximum 2 weeks continuous duration. Not for children under 6 years. Contraindicated during pregnancy and lactation.

Is it safe for children?

Topical use as a mist is generally safe. Internal use should be avoided for children under 6 years. Always consult a pediatrician before internal use of any herbal product with children.

Does it contain thujone?

Essentially no. Goldenbush contains only trace amounts of thujone (0.01% in the essential oil — the lowest of any plant in our collection), making it a particularly gentle choice among California native hydrosols. Those with seizure disorders should still consult a healthcare provider before use.

Why does it smell like watermelon?

Goldenbush's signature watermelon note comes from rare methyl decadienoate esters — compounds not found in any other commercially available essential oil or hydrosol. Our 2023 GC-MS analysis may represent the first scientific characterization of this species' essential oil chemistry.

How long does a bottle last?

A 4 oz bottle typically lasts 2–4 months with regular topical misting. If using internally (with practitioner guidance), refrigerate after opening and use within 1–2 months for optimal freshness.

Disclaimer: For educational and traditional use only. Not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Avoid eyes and mucosa. Internal use limited to maximum 2 weeks continuous duration. Consult a qualified practitioner before internal use, especially if pregnant, nursing, under 6 years old, or under medical care for depression, anxiety, or any medical condition.

Safety & Cautions

  • Please be advised to keep essential oils out of reach of pets and children.
  • Please avoid using photosensitive essential oils (Lemon, Lime, Grapefruit, Orange, Bergamot, Tangerine, Calm Shen Blend and any products made with these oils such as Santa Barbara Goldenbush Lotion) prior to going out in the sun or using a tanning booth as they can react to sunlight and cause something similar to a severe sunburn.
  • It is advised to void continuous long term use of the same essential oils.
  • Be sure to research the powerful effects of essential oils before use.
  • Use diluted essential oils on the skin (Carrier oils like Jojoba are great for this in a 10% essential oil to 90% carrier base oil ratio).
  • It is advised to patch test on a small portion of sensitive skin and discontinue if there is irritation or a negative reaction.
  • Please know the safety data and specific warnings on an individual oil or Blend before using.
  • And please use careful caution using essential oils during pregnancy. Any use should be approved by a medical provider.
  • Its important to keep essential oils away from your eyes. If oil does get in your eye, do not flush it out with water. You can dilute the area immediately with vegetable or carrier oil by placing the vegetable oil on a tissue and gently wiping the eye area.
  • Also essential oils are flammable so please avoid direct contact with flames such as candles.
  • Please do not use essential oils internally unless properly trained and prescribed by a physician. If accidentally swallowed, call the Poison Control Center (1-800-222-1222) immediately and do not induce vomiting.
