Discovery & Innovation
In 1998, Dr. Amy Inez Hazard performed what we believe to be the first artisan steam distillation of Trichostema lanatum. Nothing in the literature hinted the plant even contained an essential oil — no analysis existed and no distillation had been documented. The surprise was immediate: the plant yielded a genuinely rich, intensely sweet oil unlike anything she had distilled before. Refugio Gardens remains the first and only known commercial source for this remarkable aromatic.

Chemistry & Verification
Each batch is independently verified by GC–MS. Our 2023 analysis by Laboratoire PhytoChemia (Lot #523, consolidated total 99.26%, refractive index 1.4626) found no adulterant, contaminant, or diluent — and confirmed something remarkable: this is one of the most α-thujene-dominant essential oils ever analyzed.
- Key constituents (2023 GC–MS): α-thujene (56.71%), myrcene (6.76%), α-pinene (6.29%), β-phellandrene (6.13%), sabinene (6.01%), β-pinene (3.32%), (E)-β-ocimene (2.81%), limonene (1.07%), plus dozens of trace constituents including linalool, terpinen-4-ol, β-caryophyllene, and α-bisabolol

Laboratory studies of plant extracts show antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria — including Staphylococcus aureus — and reduced inflammatory signaling in immune cells, the first pharmacological support for the Chumash traditional use as a disinfectant and rheumatism treatment. †

- Its important to keep essential oils away from your eyes. If oil does get in your eye, do not flush it out with water. You can dilute the area immediately with vegetable or carrier oil by placing the vegetable oil on a tissue and gently wiping the eye area.
