Woolly Blue Curls Essential Oil
Trichostema lanatum — “American Wild Rosemary”
Experience the Velvet-Blue Spirit of California
Woolly Blue Curls Essential Oil (Trichostema lanatum) is a rare California native aromatic celebrated for its sweet-green, minty-pine freshness and gently euphoric clarity. Sustainably wild grown and artisan-distilled in small batches at Refugio Gardens, this pure, genuine oil captures the velvet flowers and resinous leaves that make the chaparral sparkle after rain.
Aroma & Character
- Fragrance: Very sweet-green, minty, lightly citrus, with fresh pine and soft herbal-floral warmth
- Note: Top to middle
- Energetics: Uplifting, clarifying, gently soothing
Discovery & Innovation
In 1997, Dr. Amy Inez Hazard conducted what we believe to be the first artisan steam distillation of Trichostema lanatum, revealing its distinctive sweet-green, minty-pine oil for modern aromatherapy. Refugio Gardens continues to produce small-batch, GC–MS verified distillations and remains the original artisan source for this rare native aromatic.
Uses & Benefits
- Mood & clarity: brightens outlook; supports clear, focused presence
- Comfort & ease: soothing in massage blends after exertion (always dilute)
- Atmosphere: fresh, resinous lift for meditation, creative work, or space cleansing
- Natural perfumery: sparkling top–middle accent; layers well with conifers, citrus, and soft florals
Chemistry & Research
GC–MS of our artisan batches shows a top-forward profile dominated by α-thujene, supported by monoterpenes that contribute to its sparkling freshness and calm clarity.
- What makes Woolly Blue Curls oil unusual:
- A top-heavy profile (dominant α-thujene) with an immediate green–citrus–pine sparkle
- Balanced middle with sweet herbal–floral warmth (myrcene, (E)-β-ocimene)
- Soft landing into a mild woody–balsamic base (β-caryophyllene, α-bisabolol)
Key constituents (typical range by GC–MS): α-Thujene (high), myrcene, α-pinene, β-phellandrene, sabinene, β-pinene, (E)-β-ocimene, limonene; with trace levels of linalool, terpinen-4-ol, β-caryophyllene, and α-bisabolol. †
Sustainability & Harvesting
Our Trichostema lanatum is wild grown on private ranch land in Santa Barbara County. We hand-select tops to protect plant vigor and pollinator habitat, then steam-distill at low temperatures in small batches to preserve the full aromatic spectrum.
